If you own an above ground swimming pool then you’ll know that it’s tricky trying to stabilise the temperature of the water. You don’t want the water so cold that you can’t get into it but on the other hand it shouldn’t feel like a hot bath or it could encourage the growth of green algae.
Fortunately, solar pool covers are here to assist with this problem – a decent solar pool cover, that is! A solar pool cover encourages the sun’s rays to maintain your pool’s temperature allowing all of the hard work you’ve done to keep your pool clean with chemicals, to work on your behalf.
How a solar pool cover works
Solar covers or blankets look like bubble wrap and float freely on top of the water without the use of any ties. The bubbles collect the sun rays and heat the water during the day. The more light that enters the pool, the more heat will be collected, which is why it’s best to choose a light-coloured solar cover.
Solar pool covers reduce evaporation which, as well as being the cause of lost water in your pool, is also the main reason for the loss of heat. Because a solar cover reduces evaporation, it saves money spent on heating and water.
Heat is also lost at night due to atmospheric radiation. The air bubbles in solar covers act as insulation, reducing radiation as the temperature drops at night. This combined effect results in a 5-10% increase in the temperature of your pool plus a massive saving of up to 10000 litres of water per year.
Why choose a solar cover
When you install a solar pool cover, it gives you more control over your pool and lets you extend your pool use further into the colder months. You can also cut down on costs since your water chemistry remains more consistent.
Solar pool covers are available in a variety of thicknesses. While the thickness doesn’t directly affect the collection or retention of heat, typically one made from a thick material will be more durable and last longer.
Most solar covers are supplied with a roller system which makes it easier to remove them when you want to use your pool, and also provides a means of storage and protection.
Be aware, however, that not all solar pool covers are equal. Many cheap imports disintegrate in the sun and last for no more than a season.
